 This
was my youngest Nephews first year in Pinewood Derby. He decided that
since he is a Tiger Scout, the car should look the part. He got to draw
the design based on a tracing of the wood block in the kit and then trace the
design on the block and cut it out.
 The
fenders are stock B.S.A. accessory pieces. The paint is Primer/Sealer followed
by a silver base coat. the orange is House of Kolor Tangelo pearl followed
by a light fogging of antique white on the bottom. The stripes are
freehand painted with a model brush using water based flat black model paint.
The whole car was then clear coated.
 My
Nieces Girl Scout Troop decided to get into Pine Wood Derby this year, so the
girls got to try their hand at it. Same process as before, they started
out with a page of wood block outlines and started sketching.
The
oldest came up with a futuristic streamliner design after watching the
Bonneville footage from "Worlds Fastest Indian". The canopy is from the
B.S.A. canopy pack and the fenders....would you believe plastic Easter eggs?
The
paint is Primer /Sealer with a Semi-gloss Maroon base coat. The canopy was
shot from the inside with a metallic silver and then on the outside with a
semi-gloss Black and then the maroon over that.
This was a great exercise in materials and processes for her. We played
with some plastic sheet and a heat gun before deciding on the B.S.A. canopy.
At least now she knows what the material is capable of and how to do it.
The younger of the two liked the looks of her Brothers car and sketched out a
similar design. The grill and trunk are shaped a little differently and
she wanted side pipes as well. The paint is a very basic Primer/Sealer
with a Gold base coat and then silver metallic flames shot over that with a
final clear coat.
